Black, White, and Freedom: Seeing the Color of Slavery Through Advertisements
This website was completed as part of my senior history capstone project at Mississippi University for Women. The research for this project was done mainly during the summer as part of an internship at the Columbus-Lowndes County Library in Mississippi. I searched local newspapers in both microfilm and some hardcopy forms from the years of 1833 to 1853. I scanned and transcribed the advertisements to be included as part of a runaway slave database at the University of Southern Mississippi. Overall, I collected, scanned and transcribed more than 100 runaway and committed slave advertisements.
